Knoxville to New Orleans
I started writing this when we were traveling from Austin TX to Phoenix AZ on Rt 10. Now we’re on Route 17 driving to the Grand Canyon. Here’s more updates:
We left Knoxville around 5:30 in the evening and drove through the worst rain in the whole trip. It’s about a 9 hour drive and I drove the first 4.5 in light rain… unfortunately for Ryan, he took over when it turned into a torrential downpour. To add to that we drove through the night because we left Knoxville later than expected.
The best part of the drive was when we stopped in northern Alabama to eat at a fast food place called Krystal. While deciding on the quantity of sliders to order, the cashier said “You guys aren’t from around here are you?” We talked a bit and eventually it came out that I worked at CollegeHumor and his reaction was hilarious.
“Collegehumor!? Like, the TV show!? No way! What’s the chances that you guys stopped in here….” Apparently, he didn’t know CH was an actual website, he just thought it was a TV show, which, is proof of the success of the show.
Hours of rainy driving later we arrived in New Orleans and stayed at the Best Western hotel in Metairie. We got to the hotel late so we just decompressed from hours in the car and went to sleep. The next day we went downtown to the French quarter and got breakfast at the Royal House. We ate fried catfish po’ boys, gumbo, a muffuletta sandwich, and the best bloody mary I’ve ever had. We’re making a point to try and eat local favorites only at each destination.
The rest of the day we wandered around the streets of the French quarter stopping to check out their voodoo shops, bars and outdoor markets. We also stopped to get a snack at Cafe Du Monde—an outdoor cafe. Beignets and cafe au lait’s - they were great. That night we ate dinner at a pretty average place on Bourbon St (all the other restaurants closed by 9pm), then went to a jazz club for whisky, hot buttered rum and local entertainment to finish off the night.
